The first thing that sticks is the little paper badge. It bends a bit when you pin it on, like it already knows you will be moving around a lot. People are walking in from the bright outside, and the room feels cooler than expected. Someone laughs near the door, not too loud, and you can tell they are trying to be brave about meeting new people.

At the UCSB Beyond Academia Conference, it starts simple. You find a seat, then you stand up again because you realize you want to sit closer. A speaker says something about careers and it lands in a plain way, like ok, there are real paths out there and they do not all look the same. You hear words like industry, nonprofit, government, startups. They sound big at first. Then they turn into stories about actual days at work and choices that felt scary.

Listening in is not just sitting still. It is watching how someone answers a question when they do not have a perfect answer. It is noticing how networking is really just talking without rushing it. You might write down one job title and circle it twice because it surprised you.

And then leaving is its own part of it. You walk out with your notes messy and your head kind of full. Maybe you did not get every step figured out, but you got something else. A name to follow up with. A new idea of what counts as success after college.

So yeah that is what this feels like to me right now. I am still learning how to ask better questions, but I am glad I showed up anyway.
